We finished out our day by calling an audible and trying to one more fire tower. Federal Hill was on the way home so we through Federal Hill into Google Maps and headed for it...
So, Milford, NH where the fire tower is located as the Federal Hill Fire Tower and Federal Hill Rd. You would think Federal Hill Fire Tower was on Federal Hill Rd. It is not. Google Maps brought us down Federal Hill Rd to a dirt road with trails on either side. We started down both and realized we were not in the right spot even though we could see a "fire tower" in front of us but it was way further away that what we had read for a trail distance.
Sprint failed us as we had minimal to no reception. So we drove around for a bit and then finally got a webpage to load that gave us better directions. Federal Hill Fire Tower is actually located on Ponemah Hill Rd. Yup, I do not understand it either.
- As soon as you park at this end of the access road (only way to hike up to it) you can tell this is not one of the nicer looking fire towers.
- The access road is about a 1/3 of a mile.
- The summit has a couple of heavily vandalized buildings (that still have active equipment) and the fire tower looks like it could use some TLC.
- The pro to this short hike is we finally got a view as the clouds finally lifted!
- After a few minutes on the tower we booked it back to the car.
Below are some photos from the hike (the humidity was brutal and coming from an air conditioned car fogged up the lens quite a bit):
The tallest fire tower in the state. |

Are we witnessing a fire? |
So that "fire tower" we were seeing on Federal Hill Rd is located on Birch Hill and is actually a cell phone tower disguised as a fire tower. |
The summit area. There are some more trails, but not a lot of information on how to access them. |
The Burt up close and personal! |
The GPS glitched at some point that is why there is a sharp 90º angle on the summit. |
