To finish off the Terrifying 25, we started day three at the Devil's Hopyard. Like the Ice Gulch, this is a rather random ravine that has its own climate. In this case though, the boulders are all moss covered. This is an interesting hike, especially if you venture beyond the "End of Trail" sign. The South Pond Recreation Area looks like a nice and clean swimming area, but I am not sure I would venture up here unless I had plans to hike something else in addition. When all was said and done, BishopX and I completed the Terrifying 25 nine years after unknowingly to us we started it.

  • The trail is basically flat for the entire length except for some minor elevation gain near the end of the hopyard.
  • The trail slows down due to the moss the deeper into the hopyard that you get.
  • It is well known that there is a waterfall beyond the "End of Trail" sign. We took two different ways to it and back and I think the way we came back by hugging the walls was the easier way.
  • This summer was a dry one so the waterfall was rather small, but we found it.

Near the top of the waterfall we found this.
BishopX scaling the boulders up to the waterfall.
We could hear the water, but had to look through this rock to actually see it.

We climbed up the waterfall and into the valley beyond the hopyard. If we were kids and lived near here, this is definitely where I would have spent my summers building a fort. This area was amazing.

Looking out towards the edge of the waterfall, which was basically non-existent due to the dry summer we had.
I would assume if we had heavy water that it would flow directly over these rocks.
On this day, though, the rocks were probably as dry.

GPS got a little crazy as we went beyond the "End of Trail" area.
